PROJECT 3 - BRANDZINES

For the last assessment in this module we have been told to make a bradzine on a brand of our choice (mines yet to be confirmed). A brand zine is initially a magazine but that just focuses on one specific brand. Like our last project the brief is to talk about the brand itself and a new concept of our own creation.

In Thursdays seminar we looked at examples of previous students and those of established publishers to inspire us..

12/12/13 LONDON TRIP

For our third group project we've been given a Brand, mine being Ralph Lauren in which we have to deliver a presentation explaining the brand itself and then a new concept for the brand which we, ourselves have invented. We went to London to visit our brand's flagship store and take photos/ ask any questions.

The Exterior was very classic and Christmassy and the inside followed suit; with a very festive colour scheme which reflects the palette of the brand's. Everything inside from the furnishings to the pine scented air made you feel that you were in a Ski lodge in the heights of Canada. It was extremely cosy and beautiful.

Fashion loves Art!

Page 1

One of the things I love most about my course at Uni is how we don't just focus on fashion, we focus on everything in our society and different cultures and how they impact the industry. In todays lecture we looked at how fashion is heavily influenced by Art.

Mood Board 2 - DVF

The second major project of this year was to create a moodboard, for the brand we were given based on the brand values. We had to research the brand in depth in order to create it.

The brand my group were given was Diane Von Furstenberg a Belgian born American fashion designer best known for her iconic wrap dress. I got inspired by several campaigns and mostly by her strong independence as a woman and her beliefs. Diane created The DvF Awards, which are presented annually to four women who display leadership, strength, and courage in their commitment to women’s causes.

So these are the mood boards I created. My first attempt and my second - which after some considering felt reflected the brand better.

Personal Visual Codes

In today's seminar we were asked to consider personal visual codes and create a pen profile. It was interested to really analyse  my personal self and think about why do I consume what I do, why do I wear what I wear and to consider how I would categorize myself as a consumer and within society. As well as analysing a photograph of ourselves in an outfit we answered questions which didn't directly relate to fashion - 'What do I love?", "What do I hate?" amongst other questions such as 'What are my beliefs?". I think this task was designed in order for us to be able to identify with what it is within brands and their marketing strategies that we are attracted to and what makes a competitor.  I came to the conclusion at the end of the session that categorising someone by the way they dress is a ridiculous thing to do... Just because you study Chemistry doesn't mean you have no interest in clothes or the fact that you study fashion makes you the next Alexa Chung. At the end of the day what you wear for the most part only determines how much effort you could be bothered to make in the morning and not the kind of person you are!

-What do I love?
Beyoncé (first & foremost!)
Food
Going to gigs
Musicals
Tattoos& Piercings

-What do I hate?
Heartbreak
colour...ON ME.
Being obsessive about EVERYTHING

 -Where do I shop?
Topshop
ebay
h & m
ASOS

-What do I like to drink?
Fanta ice lemon
fruit juice
Hot chocolate

-Beliefs?
Antagonist.
Athiest.
Equal rights for ALL.

Colour Theory/ Palettes

Page 1

Page 4This week we have been looking at Colour palettes bearing in mind colour theory. Colours in an image aren't just there by chance, each element has been carefully thought out. For example, which colours are positioned next to each other? Are they harmonious? Or are they contrasting? And what effect does this have on the consumer?

This is the colour palette I create based on this Diane Von Furstenberg Ad:
The first row of swatches were simply swatches of the main six colours in the image.
The Second were those colours slightly tweaked.
The third in order of importance (which featured the most)
And the final swatch which represents that visually.

MOODBOARD 1 - My favourite Designer

For this task I chose to do the brand Topshop, particularly because I liked the brandzine they released for AW 2013. Working with Maison Stella, a collage artist to give the zine a new look for Topshop. I chose to reflect the collage theme in my moodboard, also trying to play with texture the most I could.

FILM STUDIES - BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK

In todays lecture we watched a documentary about Bill Cunningham, a renowned street style photographer from New York. Doing what he loves is very nearly all he does, except to sleep and eat.

In the documentary Bill celebrates his 80th birthday. Every day he still pedals around Manhattan on his bicycle, taking photographs of what people are wearing. He has been famous for many years for doing this, and has been featured in places such as Women's Wear Daily, Vogue, and Details magazine. He doesn't know who half the celebrities are and doesn't care. He's genuinely fascinated by what people wear, not by haute couture, but by what makes people feel good about themselves.

Bill lives a very simple life. His  apartment was so filled with file cabinets of his decades of negatives that there was literally nothing else there but a mattress on top of some files. No kitchen and s bathroom down the hall. He doesn't consume any free food or drink at the high profile parties he gets invited to, he treats them as if they were work. Bill is always dressed in  one of the cheap blue smocks he finds in Paris - the ones garbage men wear, because they have lots of pockets for his film.

I personally found this film very inspirational as this is a man who has invented a career for himself and is extremely happy and humble in what he does. Is that not what everyone wants to achieve in the end?

Project 1 - Street Style Brief

Group 4 'Notts Rocks'

The primary aim of this first task was to capture images which we believed portrayed Nottingham’s unique style as well as differentiating between it’s differing sub cultures.

My group wanted to really focus on the indindual wearing the item and what th oufot says about that person rather than people wearing current specific 'trends'.

The task definitely made me realise that i shouldn't just focus on my particular age group and category when looking for inspiration.
